Rich in history
The Richmond site is full of unique history. The site was originally the location of the McLennan Hills which were a series of small scoria cones.
The site was a key vantage point for local tribes during the indigenous occupation and it was a key portage route for canoes transported between the isthmus, being the narrowest point of land between the Manukau harbour and Tamaki estuary.
Quarrying of the scoria cones over the past decades has resulted in a flat site present today, and natural springs from the scoria cones are still present today.
The site has given a lot to Auckland in its past and the architecture and urban design of the Richmond public spaces seek to draw on this natural history through subtle gestures of landform and use of materials.
